“It’s interesting how different the outcome is when we make decisions based on who we want to be instead of who we think we already are.” Christy Wright
In her book Take Back Your Time, faith-based author Christy Wright encourages readers to actively shape their lives according to who they truly want to become. She challenges the reader to list a handful of characteristics they aspire to be known for, not simply for what they assume they will be known for.
From there, she encourages readers to start making decisions from a place of who they want to be. Decision-making at this level is motivated by our values, goals, and future aspirations, thus pushing us towards growth and positive change. On the other hand, operating from a place of who we think we already are can trap us in our past experiences or self-perceptions preventing us from reaching our full potential.
For example, if generosity is something I want to be known for, but I struggle with a scarcity mentality, I face a choice: I can cling to the belief that I have nothing to offer and continue in that mindset, or I can embrace the idea that “I am generous.” When opportunities arise for me to give of my time, talents, and resources, I can act in alignment with this belief.
What an important principle to apply to our spiritual lives as well! When we make choices based on who God says we are rather than being defined by our fears, setbacks, and shortcomings, we begin to embrace “the abundant life” he has for us.
You are redeemed
You are set free
You are chosen
You are called
You are an overcomer
You are the light of the world
You are more than a conqueror
You are forgiven
You are loved
Even if you don’t “feel” these truths yet, imagine the transformative power you can experience as you start making decisions that reflect these realities- because the truth will set you free!
