Have you ever felt that uneasy tension between what you know deep down and what you’re actually feeling or experiencing?
I have. Sometimes it feels like my spirit is standing firm in God’s truth while my heart and mind are still trying to catch up. It’s disorienting; you want every part of yourself to agree, to fully rest in what you know is true. So when it doesn’t line up, it can be jarring.
But here’s the hope: alignment does come, in time. The key is continuing to nourish the root system of truth beneath the noise of chaos and confusion.
David experienced this very struggle in Psalm 42:5:
“Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.”
David had to remind his soul of what his spirit already knew. Though he was a man after God’s own heart, confident in God’s provision and protection, his soul – shaken by dire circumstances – was tempted to forget and believe another narrative.
This is the difference between the soul and the spirit. The spirit is the deepest part of a person, the God-breathed place where fellowship with Him is possible and where a new way of living in Christ is conceived. It is in the spirit that we are guided and anchored in truth.
The soul, however, is the seat of our mind, will, and emotions, shaping how we think, choose, and feel each day. While the spirit rests securely in God’s truth, the soul must continually be renewed and realigned to walk in step with it.
When life feels heavy and your soul drifts toward doubt or discouragement, don’t let it go unchecked. Like David, speak to your soul. Remind yourself of God’s faithfulness, His goodness, and His promises – even when your emotions and circumstances tell a different story.
It may feel unnatural – and maybe even a little disingenuous – at first, but each time you choose to declare truth over your feelings, you strengthen the alignment between your soul and your spirit. Keep feeding your soul with God’s Word, praise, and prayer, and watch as your heart and mind gradually come into harmony with the truth your spirit already knows.
