Long before it was celebrated with leprechauns, gold coins, parades, and copious amounts of green, March 17th was set aside as a day to remember and honor the missionary work of St. Patrick – a 5th century patron saint of Ireland.
Fun fact: St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish! Born in Britain, he was seized by Irish raiders at the age of 16 and spent six years in captivity in Ireland. During his imprisonment, he gave his life to the Lord, and after he escaped, he returned to Britain and became a priest.
Feeling called by God, he eventually returned to Ireland to spread the gospel, despite how dangerous he knew his mission would be. It was at this time that he wrote what is known today as the “Breastplate Prayer” for protection:
“Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in the eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me.”
St. Patrick faced many challenges in his missionary work, including hostility from local tribes and harsh conditions; however, the powerful imagery of this prayer reflects his deep faith in the Lord’s power to guide and protect him, shielding him from his enemies – both seen and unseen.
When it feels as if we are surrounded by opposition, our saving grace comes when we remember that He is Emmanuel – God with us. He is El Roi – the God who sees us.
He is Jehovah Jireh – our provider.
He is Jehovah Raah – our shepherd.
He is Jehovah Rapha – our healer.
He is Jehovah Shalom – our peace.
And our confidence is found in His promise to walk through even the darkest days with us: “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” Deuteronomy 31:8.
