Even Jesus, before He stepped fully into His ministry, was led by the Spirit into the wilderness (Luke 4:1). Not by accident or punishment, but on purpose. And what did He find there? Temptation. Hunger. Loneliness. The voice of the enemy. A time of testing.
Why would the Spirit lead Him there?
Because before Jesus could walk in the power of the Spirit, He had to walk through the process of refinement. He had to silence the lies of the enemy and cling to the truth of Scripture. He had to choose trust over doubt, obedience over comfort. It wasn’t glamorous. But it was essential.
The wilderness was where His identity was tested and proven. It’s where He relied solely on His Father’s voice, where He stood firm on the truth of God’s Word, and where He rejected the shortcuts offered by the enemy.
Before He could speak with authority, He had to listen in stillness.
Before He could lead others, He had to follow God’s voice alone.
Before He could walk in power, He had to walk in humility.
The wilderness didn’t weaken Him; it revealed the strength already within Him that came from perfect dependence on the Father. It forged the foundation for everything He would later do in public.
Romans 5:3-4 reminds us: “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” This is the work of redemptive suffering. God never wastes your wilderness. He uses it to shape you, stretch you, and bring you into the fullness of life He designed for you. God sees the finished product, even when all you feel is the heat.
And here’s the good news: The Holy Spirit never left Jesus in the wilderness. He was with Him the entire time – strengthening, guiding, and supplying what He needed to endure. And when the time was right, the Spirit brought Him out in POWER.
Friend, the same is true for you.
God sees the best version of you – the version that looks like Jesus, full of joy, purpose, and freedom. And He also sees exactly what it will take to get you there. Don’t you trust Him?
Let Him lead. Let Him refine. Trust the process – even the painful parts. Because He is faithful to finish what He started in you.
